What happened to the Parthenon and Athens after the end of antiquity? Most historians assume that they faded to insignificance, but this talk will present abundant evidence, both old and new, that the Parthenon became one of the most important centers of Christian pilgrimage in Byzantium. Close readings of some of its mentions in Byzantine literature will explore the tense dynamic of self-conscious classicism in a medieval Christian society.
