About LSA Theme Semesters

Theme semesters have been an integral part of the teaching and learning experience on campus for 20 years, connecting the great intellectual and cultural strengths of the University of Michigan to the issues defining our world today.

Past theme semesters have explored topics as diverse as civil rights, women’s rights, the environment, death, food, comedy, and many others.

Theme semesters provide intellectual and cultural immersion in a particular topic, combining student coursework related to a particular theme with a host of activities that include lectures by distinguished visitors, special exhibits at campus libraries and museums, theater and music performances, and film series, among others.  Not only are these events available to the campus community but many are open to the public as well.
