U. of Michigan (Ann Arbor): $2.5-million from Robert Donia, a research associate at the university's Center for Russian and East European Studies, and his wife, Jane Ritter, to endow a professorship in the history of human rights. The couple made the donation in honor of Fred Cuny, a civil engineer and disaster-relief specialist who was killed in Chechnya in 1995. Mr. Donia is also a retired vice president at Merrill Lynch & Company, the investment and wealth-management company, based in New York.
