German Film Institute
German Film Institute: Public Screenings “Unknown Weimar II: International Connections” Anton Kaes & Eric Rentschler, Directors In August of 2006, the University of Michigan will host the biannual German Film Institute. Under the direction of two leading scholars of German cinema, Professor Anton Kaes (UC Berkeley) and Professor Eric Rentschler (Harvard), this event assembles a group of experts in the field of German cinema studies for a week-long series of screenings and seminars. The German Film Institute has a long history in the field of German Studies. It began as an intensive introductory seminar, or "clearing house" for Germanists interested in working with film; the success of this model is directly measurable by the substantial body of rigorous work on film that has been published in the field of German Studies by former participants in the Institute. From this model, the German Film Institute emerged in its current format in August 2000. It now unites scholars with a research record in the field of German film studies, and on the year’s topic in particular. 2006 marks the eleventh meeting of the Institute in this form, which follows an established pattern of screenings and seminars. The meetings run for a week in August, with plenary and seminar sessions in the mornings, and screenings in the afternoons and evenings. This year's dates are August 6 through 12, and the topic is "Unknown Weimar II: International Connections." Under this heading, the group plans to focus on the international contexts and connections within Weimar Cinema. As in its past installments, the German Film Institute will consist of screenings (in many cases of rare films from archival sources), seminars, and group workshops. The event is structured to maximize interactive exchange. A substantial amount of time is devoted to close analyses of exemplary sequences as well as to intensive discussions that seek to situate the films within pertinent theoretical, analytical, and comparative perspectives. Elaborate pre-circulated bibliographies will assist participants in their preparations; handouts on a host of related topics during the institute will complement the reading materials. These screenings are free and open to the public.
The German Film Institute is sponsored by: The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, The Program in Film and Video Studies. The Insitute for the Humanities, The Office of the Vice President for Research, and LS&A. Organizer: Johannes von Moltke Directors: Prof. Anton Kaes |
