Each year the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures invites high school students enrolled in German programs throughout southeast Michigan to "German Day". Now in its 23rd year, German Day is usually held in March at the Michigan League and Rackham Graduate School, and in recent years has been attended by nearly 1,000 students. The students and their teachers come to Ann Arbor for a day of competitive activities that focus on the German language and culture: music, skits, recitations, websites and various artistic creations. The competitions are judged by members of the Department. Winning events from each category are acknowledged at the afternoon awards assembly.
