Summer Language Institute
The German Department offers a variety of intensive German courses as part of the Summer Language Institute (SLI). Students from other colleges and universities, high school seniors and practicing professionals are all welcome to apply to enroll in Summer Language Institute courses and should consult the Summer Language Institute home page for information on application procedures, tuition rates and financial aid. University of Michigan students are charged normal University of Michigan tuition rates. Students who are interested in financial aid should contact the Summer Language Institute (email um.sli@umich.edu or call 764-8571) to obtain a financial aid application form. Teaching at SLI is proficiency oriented and aims to develop strength in the four basic language skills: speaking, reading, writing and aural comprehension. Each course is designed to teach language within a cultural and social context, so that students deepen their knowledge of Germany while they develop language skills, thereby preparing themselves in a short time to take more advanced German courses during the regular academic year or for further experience in a German speaking country. The courses are supplemented as appropriate by extra-curricular programs including language tables (in German 100 and 230), guest lectures, films, and excursions to local cultural centers. These courses may be used to fulfill the language requirement and/or as stepping stones to more quickly qualify to take the advanced courses needed for a double concentration. Summer language courses are fun: the atmosphere is relaxed, there is more flexibility, and the good weather puts people into a better mood--but please note also that these are intensive courses, in which enthusiastic participation is expected, and for which a substantial amount of homework is assigned. Courses offered in the Spring Half-Term: May 1-June 22, 2007
