Courses
Language Sequence and Independent Studies Dutch language and literature have been taught at the University of Michigan since 1970. We continue to offer a strong, four-semester language sequence. Over the years, we have been able to expand the program considerably. A survey of independent studies we have arranged to meet individual students' interests and needs shows the diversity of topics possible for Dutch and Flemish Studies: colonial texts, including the Low Countries' involvement in South East Asia, Africa's West Coast, South Africa, North America, South America and the Caribbean; painters' biographies in the 17th century; 19th-century Dutch naturalistic novels; readings in Dutch East Indies' literature; the morphology of the Dutch language, music and religion in the Dutch Antilles. Course on Anne Frank Several years ago we instigated a course on the life and times of Anne Frank: "Anne Frank in Past and Present." The overwhelming response has made this course one of the cornerstones of the program. Course on Dutch Colonialism We also offer a First Year Seminar on "Dutch Colonialism and Its Aftermath." Holland was a global power in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries; it has left deep and lasting cultural influences all over the world. Ranging across literature, social and political history to art and anthropology, this course also seeks to introduce students to the discipline of integrated cultural studies more generally. |
