Home > Alumni > How to Donate
The Department continues to make extraordinary efforts to renew our faculty and curriculum, and to expand opportunities for our students. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support our work. Many options are available:
Making an Immediate Gift or Pledge
Donations of expendable funds or endowment principal
Many friends and alums are happy to make unrestricted gifts that can be expended or added to existing endowments as needed. Restricted gifts can also be made to any of our existing funds and endowments.
Ongoing pledges, either monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually
The predictable stream of income generated by such pledges is especially welcome and beneficial. These can be unrestricted or restricted; expendable funds or endowment principal. The University can arrange for a negotiated amount to be debited automatically from your bank account.
Creating and Naming Endowments
A gift of principal to create a permanent endowment
You can create and name a perpetual endowment that will grow over time and generate ever-greater interest income in support of German, Dutch, or Scandinavian Studies. Each such agreement is negotiated individually. Naming opportunities exist at many levels, beginning at $10,000. Click here to learn more about opportunities at higher levels.
Planned Giving
Charitable gift annuities
These annuities help donors to meet both financial needs and philanthropic goals by providing
· An immediate income tax deduction and capital gains tax savings
· A lifetime stream of income (fixed) for one or two persons (e.g. the donor and/or another)
· Annuity rate yields that may be substantially higher than some investment returns
· A future significant gift to support German Studies Click here to learn more about charitable gift annuities.
Bequests
It is easy to make a bequest. The most common type is one in which you direct cash or specific assets to the University, for the benefit of Germanic Languages and Literatures. These might include securities, real estate, or personal property. Sometimes the bequest is stated as a fixed amount or value; it can also be stated as a percentage of your estate. With a residuary bequest, you direct that the Department receive all or part of your estate remaining after other specific bequests and expenses related to settlement of your estate have been paid. Other methods of planned giving could also be helpful to you in meeting your financial needs and philanthropic goals. All of these instruments can be tailored to the specific purposes that are of greatest interest to you. Ways to give.
The Chair of the Department and the staff of LSA Development would be happy to discuss any of these options with you. The liason officer for the Germanic Department is Wendy Day, available at wday@umich.edu. or by telephone at (734) 615-6346.
Many thanks to you in advance for your interest and support!
